School Ambassador Fellowship Application Deadline Extended to 2/14/2018

School staff members provide vital leadership in classrooms and schools, but too often lack opportunities to contribute their knowledge to the development of education policy on a broader scale. The U.S. Department of Education designed the School Ambassador Fellowship program to enable outstanding teachers, principals and other school leaders, like school counselors and librarians, to bring their school and classroom expertise to the Department and to expand their knowledge of the national dialogue about education. In turn, School Ambassador Fellows facilitate the learning and input of other educators and community members.

Mission: The School Ambassador Fellowship is designed to improve education for students by involving educators in the development and implementation of national education policy. The Fellowship seeks to:

  • Create a community of teachers, principals, and other school staff members who share expertise and collaborate with leaders in the Federal government on national education issues.
  • Involve educators who work daily with students and teachers in developing policies that affect classrooms and schools.
  • Highlight practitioners' voices and expand educators' critical leadership at the national, state, and local levels.

Throughout their Fellowship year, School Ambassador Fellows collaborate as a team and with Alumni Fellows to:

  • Learn about federal education policy and ED
  • Reach out to teachers and schools in the field
  • Reflect with ED staff on the knowledge gained

For more information on how the Fellowship works, please see our Program Overview.

Fellowship application deadline has been extended to Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 5:00pm Eastern time. If you have questions, please contact SchoolFellowship@ed.gov

Open Educational Resources - Rule Development Input

The 2017 Oregon Legislative season has wrapped up with the signed and passed bills now moving on to the state agencies for implementation. One such bill passed this year is HB2257, which allows the Oregon Department of Education to waive the fee, under limited circumstances, for submissions of Open Educational Resources to the state instructional materials review and adoption process.

In order to implement this law, rules will need to be written to govern the fee waiver process. The rules developed to implement this law will provide guidance to state employees to make sure that the fee waiver is implemented fairly, that program funds are maintained, and that the Oregon Department of Education can provide the best experience to developers and authors of open educational resources who would like to participate in the state instructional materials review and adoption process.

That’s why we would like to ask for your input as we begin the work of drafting rules to implement HB2257. We are interested in input from all who are knowledgeable about open educational resources, and/or the state instructional materials review process.

You can provide input by completing this brief survey.

There may be additional opportunities to provide input while rules are being developed. We will continue providing updates on the implementation of this law in the #GoOpen group here on the Oregon Educator Network.

If you have additional questions, please contact Vanessa Clark (Vanessa.clark@state.or.us) or Jeremy Wartz (Jeremy.wartz@state.or.us).

The Build Math Minds Virtual Summit is an online elementary math conference that you attend in the comfort of your home.

“PD in your PJs!!!”

I’ve attended and presented at conferences across the US & in Canada since 2001. As much as I LOVE going to them, there are challenges to attending them. The cost to attend those conferences isn’t just the registration fee. Most of the cost comes from the travel expenses. Plus, there is the underlying cost of leaving your family and/or your students to go to the conference.

Many of us just can’t do it because of those limitations.

So, I’ve pulled together 27 of my favorite presenters and got them to agree to do a virtual session for all of us.

These presenters are the ones I look for first in the program book at any conference I attend, to ensure I get to their sessions. I can’t wait for you to see their presentations from the comfort of your home or the beach, or while at the park watching on your phone while the kiddos play. I hope you enjoy them!

Important Information: Be inspired by nationally recognized speakers in mathematics education. Since this conference is only in Portland, Oregon every three years, make sure you don’t miss it! SAVE THE DATE and secure approval and funding in the the 2017/2018 budget NOW!!!
