Marking Period 3
In high school we do something called panels. Panels are what prepare us for the real world. This assignment here was a preparation for the big presentation. We worked on BLAST, which is something we use to help diagnose with DNA strands. I followed the steps to put the sequence, run the BLAST, and view the results. It matched Fusarium tricinctum which is a fungus. This showed me how technology can identify organisms using their genetic code.
The final report taught me how to use DNA evidence to track the spread of illness. i used the blast tool to analyze patient samples and identify each persons diagnosis. i learned that Sue was the original source of the meningitis spread through close contact in sports. I got an 88 on the assignment but i feel like I could've explained some parts more clearly. Overall, it helped me understand how diseases spread and the importance of hygiene.
Marking Period 4
In this assignment, I created a presentation about traveling abroad to Peru and focusing on health safety. I researched different diseases common in Peru like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Yellow fever, and Rabies. I also included important vaccinations travelers should get before visiting. This helped me understand how to stay safe and healthy while out of the country.
In this peer review assignment, i evaluated my classmates genetic counseling presentations on various disorders. i took notes on their summaries, recommendations, and presentation delivery. i gave helpful feedback, like suggesting more visuals to improve understanding. Unfortunately, i received a 70 because i wasn't present to review all the groups. Next time, ill make sure to attend to complete the full chart.
Marking Period 2
This assignment helped me analyze how lifestyle choices and medical history impacts illness vulnerability. I identified patterns in symptoms and behaviors across patients which showed how germs spread.
In this I learned how ELISA testing detects the presence of specific antigens in a sample. I included antibody binding and enzymes reactions. Drawing the models helped make the process clearer and improved my ability to visualize things. i learned how color changes can be used to indicate infection presence.
