READING ACTIVITY
Are you ready to spend your summer in the bustling town of Petersville? This year, we’re inviting students to dive into the sweet world of Jessie Janowitz’s The Doughnut Fix (#1) or its sequel, The Doughnut King (#2). (Paper copies of both books will be available for loan in the OPS Main Office Lobby. You can also click the title above for the available audiobook through Hoopla.) Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur or just love a good story about small-town transformation, this assignment is for you.
Your Mission: Become a Petersville Reporter
After reading, your job is to capture the excitement by writing a journalistic article about an important event, problem, or success from the story. You have the freedom to choose your angle:
The Business Opening: Report on the big day, Tristan finally opened his doughnut stand.
The Competition: Analyze the intensifying rivalry among businesses in town.
The Community Feature: Explore how a single doughnut stand changed the heartbeat of Petersville.
WRITING YOUR ARTICLE: Every great reporter needs a plan. Here’s what your story should include:
Step 1: Create a Catchy Headline
Write a headline (hint: that's another name for a title) that grabs your reader's attention. (Example: "Doughnut Business Creates Buzz in Small Town!")
Step 2: Write "the hook" (hint: that's another name for an introduction)
In this introduction, explain the 5 Ws:
Who is involved?
What happened?
When did it happen?
Where did it happen?
Why is it important?
Step 3: This is an optional challenge!
Go beyond the basics by adding a Body Paragraph to share the juicy details, character quotes, and observations, and a closing paragraph to share lessons learned or predict what might happen next for the characters!

You can bring your completed article to school during the first week or submit it electronically.

MATHEMATICS ACTIVITY
This summer, sharpen your multiplication skills and earn your "sweet" rewards with our Donut Math Challenge! For every 10 minutes you spend practicing your multiplication facts (up to 12), fill in a donut on your Donut Math Fact Tracker. Complete all your summer assignments, and you’ll even earn a special reward like a “Donut" Do Your Homework Pass.

Flashcards: A classic way to master your facts.

Greg Tang Math Games: Explore Fluency Games for interactive challenges.
Multiplication War:
Materials: Grab a deck of cards (Ace = 1, Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 0) and challenge a friend!
How to play: Deal the deck evenly between two players. Both players flip over their top card at the same time.
How to Win: The first person to correctly multiply the two numbers together and shout out the answer gets to keep both cards.
Keep practicing, fill those donuts, and get ready for a great start to fifth grade!
COMMUNITY-BUILDING ACTIVITY
We know our fifth grade classes will be sweet! We can’t wait to get to know more about you! To kick off the school year, we want to see what makes you you. We are creating a special classroom display to celebrate all the unique students joining our fifth-grade family at OPS this year.
Your Mission: Decorate your very own paper doughnut to show off your personality! Your finished doughnut should be a creative snapshot of who you are.
What to Include on Your Doughnut:
Your Name: Make it bold and clear!
Favorite Things: From hobbies to snacks, tell us what you love.
Summer Memories: Share a highlight or a special moment from your summer break.
Future Goals: What are you most looking forward to at OPS this year?
How to Submit: Bring your finished, decorated doughnut with you during the first week of school. We will be using them to create a classroom bulletin board display, showing everyone that our OPS fifth grade class is truly sweet!
