READING ACTIVITY

At Oradell Public School, we believe that creating lifelong readers and learners is at the heart of what we do, and that learning doesn’t end when school does. As we live The Way of the Panther, we encourage every student to show curiosity, courage, and commitment, even over the summer!

This summer, we’re challenging our students to push past their comfort zones by exploring a variety of genres and making reading part of their daily routine. All students entering first grade will read any Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown.

After reading, complete a Flat Stanley Activity Paper:

Draw a picture
Write about your favorite part of the story

MATHEMATICS ACTIVITY

Hey Panther Families! Ready to make some memories this summer? We have a special mission for our students, and it all starts with a very special travel buddy: Flat Panther!

Whether you are heading on a big family vacation, going to summer camp, or just hanging out at the local park or pool, your Flat Panther wants to come along for the ride.

Your Summer Mission

While you are out exploring, practice some fun math and writing skills by tracking Flat Panther's journey. Here is what you need to do:

Take Flat Panther Everywhere: Pack him in your suitcase, backpack, or beach bag!
Keep a Tally Mark Data Chart: Every single time you take Flat Panther to a new spot, add a tally mark to your chart. Let's see how high your data can go!
Make a Travel List: On your list paper, write down the names of the places Flat Panther has been (e.g., the backyard, Grandma's house, the library, the beach).

Materials Needed

Everything you need to complete the assignment fits right in a folder:

Flat Panther (cut out and decorate him or draw your own)
Tally Mark Data Chart (for tracking your total visits & writing down your locations)

Bring your completed charts and lists back to school in September to share your adventures with your new class. Have a wonderful summer...happy exploring!

COMMUNITY-BUILDING ACTIVITY

We would love to see where our Panthers are traveling! Take a picture with your Flat Panther anywhere you go this summer. Bring (or email) the photo and write one sentence to tell where you went or how you showed Panther Pride over the summer. Maybe you held the door for someone, helped set the table, included a friend, helped a family member, or showed kindness and responsibility in another way.

In September, students will share about their summer adventure with Flat Panther during OPS Circle.
