This summer, we’re challenging our students to push past their comfort zones by exploring a variety of genres and making reading part of their daily routine. Each student will read Frindle by Andrew Clements. (Paper copies of Frindle will be available for loan in the OPS Main Office Lobby. You can also click the title above for the available audiobook through Libby! While reading, take the Frindle Word Challenge by finding and defining 10 new vocabulary words.
After reading Frindle, create a Frindle-inspired Word Design. Each student's word design will be hung for all to enjoy at Back to School Night.
MATHEMATICS ACTIVITY
Chalk Math: Summer Calculations in Action!
Who says math has to stay inside? This summer, we’re taking our skills to the sidewalk! We are challenging all incoming fourth graders to head outside, get creative, and solve 10 math problems using sidewalk chalk.
Whether you’re working on your driveway or joining your friends on the OPS sidewalks, this is your chance to show off your math mastery in the sunshine.
How to participate:
The Challenge: Solve 10 math problems using sidewalk chalk.
The Evidence: Don't forget to take a picture of your finished calculations! You will need to print these photos out and bring them to your new teacher when we return in September.
Need Supplies? We’ve got you covered! Sidewalk chalk is available for pickup in the OPS main office.
We can't wait to see your work! Photos of your "Chalk Math" masterpieces will be featured in a special fourth grade September bulletin board collage!

COMMUNITY-BUILDING ACTIVITY
Summer is all about making memories, and we can’t wait to see what yours look like! As part of our summer learning, we want to hear the story behind your summer.
The Challenge:
We’re asking every student to bring in one souvenir (a small object or photograph) that represents your summer.
What counts as a souvenir?
It doesn’t have to be from a big trip! Whether you went on a grand adventure or had an amazing “staycation” right here at home, we want to see it. Think of something that tells a story:
A photograph of a backyard picnic
A postcard from a special visit/trip
A unique rock found on a nature walk
Your Oradell Swim Club pool pass
A magnet from a favorite place
Why are we doing this?
When we return in September, these souvenirs will be our special icebreakers during our first "OPS Circle." Plus, they will serve as the perfect inspiration for our first writing unit, where we’ll be practicing how to write "Good News Stories" like real journalists!
