The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, remains the most important social and economic holiday in Chinese societies. Originally tied to the lunar Chinese calendar, the holiday was a time to honor household and heavenly deities as well as ancestors. It was also a time to bring family together for feasting.
OPRF's Chinese program has brought the tradition to the school since 2012.
The celebration lasts for a week. Students learn about the legends, New Year expressions and poems, and playing games and doing calligraphy in class. At end of the week, students also host a festival to share the tradition with the OPRFHS community. Each year, we make a T-shirt featuring the Zodiac animal of the year as a fundraiser for the program.
In addition to the in-school activities for students, we extend our invitation to families and friends to join a banquet to conclude the celebration.
