Confirmed Strike Day and School Closure - 23 October
Kia ora e te whānau,
I hope this message finds you well. The NZEI Te Riu Roa (the teachers’ union) has notified the Onehunga Primary School Board of the confirmed industrial strike action on Thursday 23 October 2025.
After careful consideration, the Board has made the difficult decision that, should the strike proceed, the school will be closed for the day. This is due to the limited number of non-striking staff available on the day, including the absence of senior leadership team members, to ensure safe staffing ratios and management.
As a result, we ask that all parents and caregivers make alternative arrangements for the care of their children as the school will not be able to provide supervision during the strike period.
We have confirmed with sKids that they will be open from 8.30am - 3pm in addition to the usual 3pm- 6pm slot. You can visit https://www.skids.co.nz/or call 0800 274 172 to find out more.
You may also be eligible for the OSCAR Subsidy, which helps with the cost of out-of-school care. To learn more please visit https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-z-benefits/oscar-subsidy.html. Alternatively, you can call 0800 559 009 and request an interpreter in your https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-z-benefits/oscar-subsidy.html referred language.
If you are not eligible for OSCAR funding, or if it does not meet your needs and you are experiencing significant financial hardship, please contact me at botchair@onehungaprimary.school.nz.
