Board Of Trustees Update 13/08/26
Kia ora
A very warm welcome to Sa Lialia’i who has joined the Board of Trustees as the newly elected staff representative. We thank Rochelle Wolhuter for her time on the board in this role and wish her every success in Warkworth.
Paul Leulusoo took the board through the mid-year report data. He highlighted the new descriptors from the curriculum, which are an adjustment from the previous reporting. We also looked at the attendance data and
curriculum areas that may need further support from the board moving forward. Thank you, Paul, for your hard work with this incredibly thorough document.
A huge thank you to our school community for their involvement in the online community consultation. We have been amazed at the response and also thank those that filled in the top priorities ‘dot’ board at whanau connect. It is wonderful to have so many in our school community engaged in this process to help create our strategic plan for the next three years. As always, if you have anything further to add please do get in touch with a board member.
Our school community is quite incredible and this was very clear with the amount of meals provided for the staff at the recent whanau connect evenings. Thank you to those that continue to do that little bit extra.
Date for your diary: Teacher only day - Tuesday 27th October 2026
Kia ora Onehunga Primary School Whānau,
We trust you and your family have settled well into the rhythm of Term 2, as the year marches on quickly!
Our Board of Trustees (BOT) currently has a focus on developing our consultation plan with our school community. The purpose of this year-long process is to ensure whānau voices are represented in our strategic planning for the next three years of our school.
Thank you to those of you who shared initial feedback with us last term. We are exploring ways to provide more opportunities to hear from you. This includes a series of whānau hui and fono, drop-in sessions to have a kōrero with us, and online surveys. These will be advertised in next week’s newsletter. In the meantime, feel free to touch base with us at any time with your whakaaro (thoughts and ideas): opsbot2026@onehungaprimary.school.nz
The 2026 Annual Implementation Plan has been published. This is a working document used by our staff, leaders and BOT to plan and work towards a prioritised set of goals and targets for our school in 2026. The updated 2026 Annual Implementation Plan reflects the government’s areas of focus - a revised Mathematics and Statistics and English Curriculum. The implementation plan is updated once at the end of each term and is available here: BOT approved 2026 OPS Annual Implementation Plan
We would like to encourage regular school attendance for our students to support their best opportunities to thrive. As a school, we are keen to support families who may be facing additional barriers to attendance – please do come and have a confidential chat with your child’s teacher or one of our senior leaders if you wish.

Board Of Trustees Update 12/02/26
Welcome back to all of our OPS whānau, and a special welcome to whānau and tamariki who are new to the school. It was wonderful to see so many whānau visiting classrooms and meeting with new teachers on the Thursday before school started, and attending the ‘Share and Connect’ evenings this week.
We also want to highlight the professional learning days our OPS staff attended before school started for the year. The sessions focused on key areas including curriculum changes, health and safety, whanaungatanga with our local community, strategic planning and reviewing and planning how to create OPS EPIC environments. This investment in and by our staff will have a direct impact on our students.
Our first Board of Trustees meeting for 2026 will be held next Tuesday, 17 February at 5.30 pm in the office meeting room. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings, and you will find details of upcoming meetings in the school newsletter calendar section. You can also view all Board of Trustees information in the ‘BOT Information’ section of the OPS website.
Thank you all for your ongoing support.

Board Of Trustees Update 30/10/25
Kia ora koutou,
It was great to have Paul and Megan join us at the October Board meeting. Viki, Paul and Megan shared the student achievement trends from the last 2 years, the latest student achievement data and insights from the recent ERO report. The Board wants to acknowledge the strong results and progress being made across the school, and the clear commitment from our teachers and staff to supporting every learner. A huge thank you to the entire team, your dedication and care for our ākonga is greatly appreciated.
The Board is proud of the EPIC approach to learning that the school has developed and has encouraged that these be made even more visible around the school and on our website.https://sites.google.com/onehungaprimary.school.nz/ops-website/our-learning/epic-learning-environments
We also discussed how we can continue to honour Te Tiriti through genuine engagement with Māori whānau, and we are exploring ways to strengthen Māori representation on the Board.
Improving attendance continues to be a key focus. We know that being at school regularly makes an impact on learning progress. We also recognise the wider challenges some families are facing and remain committed to supporting our community in a mana-enhancing way.
Looking ahead, we’re beginning early work on the 2026–2027 Annual Plan. We are planning opportunities to hear from our community next year as we prepare to develop our 2027-2029 Strategic Plan.Property-wise, the upgrade of the pool changing sheds is on track for the upcoming holidays, and the leadership team is preparing the draft 2026 budget for our next meeting.
As always, thank you to all parents, caregivers, and the entire OPS community for the ongoing mahi you put in to make our school a great place to learn and grow.

Board Of Trustees Update 23/10/25
Welcome on Board workshop October 2025
The new OPS board enjoyed an evening of learning when attending the Welcome on board workshop at Te Papapa School on Tuesday, 14th October 2025, hosted by NZSBA (New Zealand School Board Association).
We were joined by many school board members from our local community - Te Papapa, Royal Oak Intermediate, Royal Oak Primary, Waterlea School, St Joseph's and Onehunga High School.
This was a great opportunity to learn more about school governance, and our role in developing robust policies and clear strategic direction alongside the CEO/Principal.
We learnt about working together as a team, being honest, strong communication from all members (no passengers) and evaluating regularly how we are going as a board, while always placing student wellbeing and achievement at the centre of all decision-making.
It was a great start for our enthusiastic new team, and we look forward to learning more on our governance journey.

Board Of Trustees Update 14/8/25
Kia ora e te whānau,
Following a productive meeting this month, the Board of Trustees would like to share a few key updates with our school community.
We are thrilled to announce a rising trend in student performance, a positive outcome we've seen since the recent Whānau Connect sessions and the mid-year reports. This is a testament to the hard work of our students, teachers, and the strong support from you at home.
As part of the Ministry of Education's requirement for all schools in 2026, we have formally approved our new Attendance Management Plan. This plan outlines our school's commitment to ensuring every student has the best possible chance to succeed by attending school regularly.
Finally, we have received feedback on priorities and have begun developing our new Strategic Plan for 2026-2028. This is a crucial document that will guide our school's future direction, and we look forward to engaging with our community as this process unfolds. Mrs Holley is now working with teachers about engaging with students on providing their input.
This marks the final meeting for the current Board of Trustees, with elections beginning this week. The next meeting will be a handover to the newly elected representatives. We encourage everyone to participate in the election—your vote is vital in shaping our school's future.

Confirmed Education Review Office Report - May 2025

Congratulations to our staff, students and whānau for the part you play in our school's success.
The report confirms Onehunga Primary School is demonstrating increasing success and progress for all learners, underpinned by excellent school performance.
A key driver of this success is excellent quality teaching practice, leading to improved achievement in literacy and mathematics.
Our school provides rich learning opportunities across a broad curriculum and effectively supports learners with complex needs.
The report strongly suggests that effective school planning and conditions, guided by strong leadership, are contributing to this excellent performance.

Board of Trustees Update April 2025
The Board of Trustees would like to extend our congratulations and appreciation to our Senior Leadership Team and all our staff. The recent ERO (Education Review Office) review, conducted over the past six months, has highlighted the exceptional work being done here at Onehunga Primary.
Having a non biased external review of our school is a great opportunity for reflection and growth.
We know how much hard work went into preparing for and participating in this review, and we are absolutely thrilled with the anecdotal feedback we've received so far. While we wait for the official draft report, we can confidently share that the ERO team's observations have been overwhelmingly positive.
It's particularly pleasing to hear that the ERO team actually raised some of the self-evaluations made by our own staff, recognising the high standards and commitment that are already in place. This speaks volumes about the professionalism and dedication of our team. We truly are fortunate to have such amazing educators shaping the learning experiences of our tamariki.
Thank you to everyone involved for your commitment to ongoing improvement. We are incredibly proud of you all!
Ngā mihi,
Amanda Wellgreen

Board of Trustees Update February 2025
Kia ora koutou,
Following our first Board of Trustees meeting for 2025, we're pleased to share some updates with our school community.
Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing our new sports shed to life! The students are thrilled with the space, and it's a fantastic addition to our school. We are grateful for the grants from Blue Waters Community Trust and Akarana Community Trust and contributions from Friends of the School fundraising events and our annual school ‘Fun Run’ sponsorship.
We also want to acknowledge the incredible professional development our teachers engaged in during the January professional learning days before school started for the year. The sessions focused on key areas including ‘structured literacy’, cultural responsiveness, emotional environments as part of our OPS EPIC environments, and staff and student wellbeing. This investment in our teachers directly benefits our students, and we're already seeing the positive impact of their learning.
A special shout-out to our dedicated Learning Leaders and staff for their hard work and passion in driving improvement in literacy, maths, and spelling outcomes for our students. Our BOT heard presentations from each Learning Community about targeted groups of learners. The presentations were inspiring, demonstrating the positive impact of hands-on learning and targeted support. We also reviewed student achievement data from 2024 and look forward to sharing this in our 2024 Highlights and Celebrations document soon.
A key topic discussed at the meeting was the increasing number of students in our school with additional and sometimes complex needs. The Board is committed to Onehunga Primary School being inclusive and advocating for resourcing and support for all students and our staff. A subcommittee has been formed to explore possible solutions and funding options, and we will be actively engaging with the Ministry of Education, as well as other relevant agencies like the Ministry of Health and OT. We will keep you updated on our progress in this area.
Looking ahead, we'd like to draw your attention to the upcoming Board of Trustees election in September. This is a crucial opportunity for you to have your say in the governance of our school. If you're interested in learning more about the Board's role and responsibilities, I'd like to invite you to a Q&A session with me before our next meeting on 2 April at 5:00 pm. More details about this session will be shared closer to the date. We encourage anyone considering standing for the Board to come along and find out more!
We appreciate your ongoing support and engagement in our school community.
Ngā mihi,
Amanda Wellgreen
