Well-Being & Mental Wellness

Healthy Minds Lead to Healthy Outcomes

At OGC, we pay great attention to both, mental as well as physical well-being of our students and staff. We recognize that the past few months have been challenging for adults and children alike and the return to school in such uncertain times can be apprehensive and overwhelming for all.

Keeping the mental health of our staff, students and parents as our prime focus, we have developed a comprehensive Mental Health Plan using research based evidence, governmental and public health recommendations as well as findings from OGC Guidance Counselling data.

The goal of the MAC OGS Mental Health Plan is to support staff/student mental health and well-being using the guiding principles of Islam.

Using a collaborative and whole-school approach, we aim to create a safe space for students and staff at school and build resilience to withstand life challenges.

All staff will be provided with proper training to effectively welcome students back, making the transition as smooth as possible in these challenging times.

How OGC supports staff and students

Mental Health Plan

  • Our Mental Health and Wellness team has produced our data driven annual plan for different programs/initiatives and strategies to support our students, staff and families

  • A series of training sessions will be conducted throughout the year to support our students, staff and parents in coping with the current situation

  • Students will have access to staff resources to support their return to school, including Guidance Counsellors and Student Success Teachers

  • We now have two full-time Guidance Counsellors dedicated to OGS and OGMS/OGHS

  • We will be partnering with community agencies from time to time to ensure that a wide range of programs and resources are available to our students

Professional Development, Learning and Resources for Staff

  • Prior to school reopening, School Mental Health Ontario will provide school boards with a professional learning framework and toolkit to support the mental health of all students

  • Our staff will receive professional development before school starts and throughout the year to deal with matters of health and safety as well as adapt new procedures

  • Staff will be provided with mental health PD to build capacity for supporting students' return to school and throughout the school year

  • Professional learning for staff will have a strong focus on building students' social-emotional learning skills to help them build personal resilience, manage their stress and build positive relationships
