Oak Harbor High School has a robust offering of band and other instrumental music classes:
Jazz Ensemble at OHHS is alive and well with three distinct ensembles. Jazz Ensemble I is our select, advanced group that focuses on challenging repertoire and represents OHHS at festivals and competitions. Jazz Ensemble II is a welcoming group for any student interested in learning to play in the jazz style and helps students build skills and confidence in jazz performance. The Swing Band is a community-oriented ensemble specializing in swing dance style jazz and performs throughout Oak Harbor at community events and dances. All ensembles meet during 0 Period before school every day, giving students the chance to explore jazz, perform at local events, and attend adjudicated festivals and competitions.
Concert Bands at OHHS consist of three distinct classes. Our Freshman Band is designed specifically for ninth graders as well as any other students who want to add an additional band class to their schedule. Beyond that, students can continue their instrumental music education in either the auditioned Wind Ensemble, which performs advanced repertoire, or the non-auditioned Symphonic Band, which provides a supportive setting to further develop musical skills.
Pep Band brings the energy to Oak Harbor athletics, performing at most home boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball games throughout the winter. Open to both band and non-band students, it’s one of the largest student groups in attendance and plays a key role in creating school spirit and excitement at every game.
Marching Band begins rehearsals a few weeks before the start of school and continues with twice-weekly practices throughout the fall season. The group performs a dynamic halftime show at all home football games and represents OHHS at marching competitions across the Pacific Northwest.
Percussion Ensemble includes both dedicated percussion students at OHHS and anyone interested in learning or playing percussion. The ensemble prepares and performs its own music for band concerts while also supporting the larger concert bands by providing percussion parts as needed. *This class currently is not being offered*
Beginning Class Guitar is an instrumental music elective at OHHS where students learn the fundamentals of playing guitar. Over the course of a single trimester, students develop essential skills and gain the foundation—and inspiration—to continue playing beyond the class.
