The MTSS framework emphasizes a proactive, systematic approach to student behavior. At Odyssey, we foster a positive school climate by imbedding our CIRCLE (Courage, Integrity, Respect, Curiosity, Leadership, Excellence) Values into every aspect of the school day. We promote expected behaviors and implement RULER, a research-based approach to Social-Emotional Learning, in all grades Pre-K through 8th grade.
The MTSS behavior process involves the same key components as academic support and is structured across 3 Tiers to provide escalating levels of intervention and support.
Tier 1: Universal Interventions- This foundational tier targets all students and includes proactive strategies and practices to promote positive behavior and prevent issues. Odyssey staff establish clear behavioral expectations, then teaches these expectations to students and consistently reinforces them. Regular monitoring and data collection help identify overall trends and ensure that the school climate remains positive and supportive.
Tier 2: Targeted Interventions - For students who exhibit additional need despite the universal support, Tier 2 provides more specified support. This Tier includes more focused strategies such as small group interventions, social skills training, behavioral contracts, and Check-In/Check-Out. Data collection continues, allowing for progress monitoring and adjustments to the interventions as needed.
Tier 3: Intensive Interventions- When students require more individualized and intensive support, Tier 3 interventions are implemented. These interventions are highly personalized and often involve collaboration with specialists such as counselors or behavioral interventionists. Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) may be conducted to develop a specific Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) tailored to the student's unique needs.
Throughout all Tiers, the MTSS process relies on continuous data collection, analysis, and data driven decision-making. Collaboration among educators, parents, and specialists is crucial to ensure interventions are effective and that students receive the appropriate level of support. This systematic approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to achieve behavioral success, contributing to a positive and conducive learning environment.
