The purpose of Check In- Check Out is to avoid recurring incidents and discipline referral forms. All students are provided with universal (Tier 1) support, and those in need of secondary level (Tier 2) support are provided with behavior support strategies in addition to the universal support. The Check In- Check Out program is not a form of punishment for students but is viewed as a positive intervention to help students boost self-awareness of their school day.
Students using the Check In- Check Out program are given a daily chart that displays expectations they are striving to meet and a daily goal. Teachers will give students frequent feedback on their goals throughout their school day. The expectations are connected to Odyssey’s school rules (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Honest). Basic features of the Check In- Check Out program include:
A positive Check-in with an adult in the morning to set students up for a successful school day.
Regular feedback and reinforcement from teachers.
Positive family component (home check-in)
Daily performance data is used to evaluate progress (every 6 weeks).
Goal-setting is a key component of this procedure.
