Q: What are the benefits of MTSS?
MTSS provides targeted support for the whole student academically, social-emotionally, and behaviorally. With a structured, on-going progress monitoring and problem-solving process, all students are continuosly assessed in each domain to indentify students who need additional support or interventions. Universal screening assessments combined with data analysis help educators determine if the Tier 1 core instruction is meeting the needs of students and what additional support is needed.
Q: What are the 3 Tiers of MTSS?
Tier 1: This tier includes all students in the general education classroom. Students in Tier 1 may work in small groups and have learning supports that suit their specific needs. If a student is demonstrating a need that the core instruction can not address, the student will move to Tier 2.
Tier 2: Students receiving Tier 2 level of intervention will receive more individualized support. This may be in small groups and may be in the regular classroom setting or outside of the regular classroom setting depending on need. Students continue to receive core instruction in the classroom every day. The MTSS team along with classroom teachers will monitor the student's progress, If students shows improvement, they may move back to Tier 1. If a student does not show improvement, educators may recommend moving the student to Tier 3 to receive additional support.
Tier 3: This tier is the most intensive level of support. Students in Tier 3 will continue to receive core instruction in the regular classroom as well as small group instruction and intervention. Students may also receive more specialized instruction in a 1-1 setting.
Q. How is it decided that a student needs additional support?
Students are assessed through universal screening assessments, district assessments and classroom performance. When a student is found to be performing below grade level expectations, a team of teachers and specialists review the student's current and past performance and takes into consideration academics, social-emotional learning, behavioral health, and attendance. If deemed necessary, an intervention plan is developed.
Q. Is there a specific time during the year when students are identified for support?
Teams of teachers, specialists, interventionalists and school leaders meet frequently throughout the school year to review student progress.
Q. Who provides instruction at each tier?
Classroom teachers provide Tier 1 core instruction for all students. In addition to classroom teacher support, instruction may be given by the Literacy or Math Specialist, an Interventionist, a Special Education Staff, or another staff member based on the student need.
Q. How do you know my child is making progress through the intervention you are providing?
Progress monitoring shows how well the teaching strategies and chosen materials are working or if it needs to be changed. Progress monitoring includes observations and other types of assessment. Students are assessed every 2 to 3 weeks. When progress monitoring shows that a student’s needs are not being met through the intervention, the intervention may be changed.
Q. Am I informed of progress if my child is receiving interventions?
Yes! Communication is a key component of the MTSS process. Progress Reports will be sent home each trimester. You can also reach out to Jennifer Renkiewicz, MTSS Coordinator, at any time. Email: jrenkiewicz@odysseyschool.org
Q. What is my role as a parent?
Ask your child to tell you about what they are learning. Ask your child’s teacher how you can help at home. If your child is receiving intervention, find out specific ways you can lend support.
