Instructions for Storing Indigenous Items in the History Boxes
The History Boxes contain a variety of traditional Indigenous items, such as a First Nation drum, which are deeply connected to Indigenous knowledge and cultural practices. While the storage guidelines in the boxes differ from those set by the OCSB in partnership with Algonquin community members, after discussions with the Kitigan Zibi Cultural Centre, it was decided that drum storage should follow the guidance of the Elder who made the drum—in this case, Mi'kmaq Elder Todd Labrador.
While storing the drum as recommended in the History Boxes is acceptable, it’s not the usual protocol.
If your school has drums, please review the drum storage and Indigenous protocols for our region. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
