This song is an early example of Métis pride and identity. It was written by Pierre Falcon to celebrate the Métis victory at the Battle of Seven Oaks in 1816. At the time, the Métis were also known as “les bois-brûlés.”
The Métis Nation was formed through the relationships between First Nations people and European fur traders. Over time, the Métis developed their own unique culture and language.
The Battle of Seven Oaks happened because of growing tensions between the Métis and European settlers in the Red River Valley.
