Preparing for Kindergarten
What does my child need to bring?
Lunch Bag and reusable water bottle
Backpack that comfortably fits their lunch bag, water bottle and ziploc (to be supplied)
One pair of indoor running shoes to be kept at school (velcro is preferred)
One pair of outdoor shoes (or boots depending on the season)
Extra change of clothes to be kept at school (pants, shirts, socks, underwear, please send in a ziploc bag labelled with their name)
We kindly ask you to label all clothing and belongings
Lunch/Nutrition Breaks
Kindergarten students have access to an open snack table during their two indoor play blocks. This allows them to practice self regulation, taking a break and eating when they feel hungry throughout the day. Our two designated nutritional breaks are at 11:20 and 2:05 pm. The educators guide them in taking the time they need to ensure proper handwashing, eating at their own pace and packing up their belongings when they are done.
Wazoson follows the litterless lunch program - students are encouraged to use reusable containers & bring home any garbage. Wazoson also offers the opportunity for students to participate in a hot lunch program, ordering pizza or through the Lunch Lady program.
Outdoor Play
Learning in the outdoors is an essential piece of the Ontario Kindergarten curriculum, and provides extensive learning opportunities.
We go outside twice daily in all reasonable weather. We ask parents to ensure their child is dressed appropriately for the weather. This can mean rubber boots, rain pants/suits, hats etc.
Quiet/Rest Time & Mindfullness
Throughout the day students have access to a quiet area, where they can go to regulate their bodies or engage in quiet activities. The whole class also participates in a daily quiet time, where students have the option to lay down and rest, read books or play with puzzles.
Yoga and mindfulness is also taught to the children as a tool to regulate and calm their body.
How Can I help prepare my child for kindergarten?
You can help your child prepare for kindergarten by allowing them to practise and be independent with:
Putting their shoes on and taking them off
Opening and closing their backpack, lunchbag, food containers
Independent toileting and hand washing
Zipping up their sweaters and jackets
Wiping their nose
