Assignment 3.1 Rules of Composition

In your TGJ2O Folder Create a subfolder named Photography

Within your Photography Folder create a Google doc called Lastname_Firstname, Rules of Composition 3.1

Insert a page number in the lower left footer, follow it up with a page count (ex: page 1 of 5)

Insert a header in the upper right corner with your First initial and Last Name

Matching the example document shown to you in class create a 2X3 table for each of the 10 rules of composition plus an 11th rule you find somewhere else.

In the top left of the table you will write the rule's name

In the top left of the table you will write a description of the rule in your own words.

In the middle left of the table you will write: Example from website: (paste in website address)

In the middle right of the table you will write: My example of this I found on this website: (paste in the website address)

On the lower left side of the table you will insert the example image from the provided link, on the lower right side of the table you will search for, find and insert different example of the same rule of composition. Make sure to find examples of pictures that you will be able to duplicate here at the school.

When completed you will submit your assignment twice, once by sharing it as a google doc and once by saving it as a pdf and handing it in to the dropbox.

Assignment 3.2 My Photos that fit the Rules of Composition

For this assignment you will make a copy of the previous assignment's document rename it Lastname_firstname, My Photo Composition, 3.2

Using the copied document you will replace the pictures in the right columns of the tables with pictures that you will take that meet the desired Photo Composition Rule.

In the upper right corner of the table you previously described the rule in your own words, now you will replace that with an explanation/ description of how the photo you took meets the rule of composition.

In the middle right table slot you will record where the picture was taken on school property

When your instructor checks that you have prepared the document correctly you will be loaned a camera to take your own picture meeting the criteria of the 11 Rules of Composition,

Before heading out to take pictures check out the youtube video bellow to avoid some common mistakes in photography.

Rules for picture taking in the school:

  • Must stay on school property if going outside
  • Must abide by the school code of conduct while moving about the school,
  • Be respectful of the classes taking place while moving through the halls
  • Must have a photo hall pass
  • Taking pictures of people must be done with their consent
  • Taking photos outside of the classroom is a privilege and can be revoked

When the assignment is complete share it as a google docs with your instructor as well as submit it as a .pdf to the dropbox

Assignment 3.3 Photo of the week challenge

By the end of class every Thursday throughout the photography unit you will submit a photo you took as an entry in to the photo of the week challenge. Every Friday you will get to rank the top 5 submissions with the top ranking photo being featured on our website's home page.

To keep the process as objective as possible we will follow 2 rules

Photos are to be submitted ananonmosly with the file name being: (#####)anonweek1.jpg or (nameofpicture)week(1).jpg (#### = Generate random number, add week number every week)

You are not to show the photo you are submitting to anyone else in the class

  • No people in image
  • Image is to be in colour
