TIMARA Teaching Assistants (TIMARA TAs) provide regular, open office hours for students enrolled in specific TIMARA courses. During regularly scheduled office hours, TIMARA TAs help students troubleshoot issues with hardware or software that they are encountering in the studios, assist students with conceptualizing, building, or troubleshooting code for creative projects, or help students learn a new skill or a new piece of software. TIMARA TAs are typically third, fourth, or fifth year TIMARA majors, or students who have excelled in the TIMARA core curriculum. TA hours are held in Cafe TIMARA or in specific TIMARA studios, weekly. Priority for TA time is given to those currently enrolled in TIMARA courses; others may ask for assistance as time permits.
Successful completion of TECH 201 - 203 is required
Successful completion of TECH 330 and/or a maker space class is preferred
Responsible, punctual, consistent
Excellent communication skills
TA hours vary by class and will be arranged with course instructors.
Assist all students enrolled in TIMARA courses with troubleshooting the hardware and software issues that invariable occur while working in the studios.
Use the studio logs to submit any issues and solutions so that other students know what to do when they encounter similar problems.
Assist fellow majors working on creative projects with conceptualizing, creating, and/or troubleshooting code, learning new software, and practicing new skills.
As time permits, assist non-majors and community members with technical questions related to audio and/or video-editing
Assist faculty with tasks related to general course work
Submit brief reports of completed tasks at the end of each work session
Over the course of the semester, each TA is encouraged to create a training resource for the studios related to the course to which they are assigned. Resources might include video documentation explaining how to set up a session in one of our studios or an online tutorial for a specific piece of software, for example. These resources will be made available on the internal TIMARA wiki, and, collectively, will help students expand and enhance their existing skillset while simultaneously providing TAs a resource for their teaching portfolios.
Please note that the TIMARA Department relies on teaching assistants as a critical community resource. Please only apply for this position if you can commit to being punctual consistently, and to attending or finding substitutes (and alerting the studio engineer) for any missed shifts. Please arrange for substitutes at least one week in advance of the shift you plan to miss. If you are sick, please attempt to find a substitute, even if it is less than a week before your shift. If a teaching assistant is consistently late or misses many shifts, their hours may be reassigned to a teaching assistant substitute.
