Maker space assistants help keep the TIMARA maker space clean and organized; they help ensure that the maker space is ready for class and for general lab work, check that all soldering irons are functional, replace soldering iron tips and exhaust fan filters, check that each station is stocked with tools, alert the studio engineer when supplies run low, and organize components and tools. Maker space assistants also present brief introductory workshops to the maker space and its tools for TIMARA community members, and administer quizzes to those seeking permission to use the space. Because a clean, organized maker space is a critical resource for our department, a minimum of one hour per week of the maker space assistant’s time should be devoted to cleaning tasks.
Maker space assistants must:
To be arranged with studio engineer.
Over the course of the semester, under the guidance of the TIMARA studio engineer, the makerspace assistant will undertake one major organizational or instructional project. When other regular tasks have been completed during the weekly sessions, maker space assistants will utilize their remaining time working on these tasks. Suggested tasks will be provided by the studio engineer, and the maker space assistant and studio engineer will finalize details about the nature of the semester-long task collectively.
The substitute maker space assistant fulfills all of the roles of the regular TIMARA maker space assistant position when the regular maker space assistant is unavailable. Substitute maker space assistants should typically be available during the regular maker space assistant slots, and be prepared to step in to help out whenever feasible. Maker space assistants will ideally seek substitutes at least one week in advance of the shift they will miss, though notice may be much shorter if the regular studio assistant is sick or has an emergency.
Please note that the TIMARA Department relies on studio assistants as a critical community resource. Please only apply for this position if you can commit to being punctual consistently, and to attending or finding substitutes (and alerting the studio engineer) for any missed shifts. Please arrange for substitutes at least one week in advance of the shift you plan to miss. If you are sick, please attempt to find a substitute, even if it is less than a week before your shift. If a studio assistant is consistently late or misses many shifts, their hours may be reassigned to a studio assistant substitute.
