Author visit by Anthony McGowan

The highlight of this half-term has been the virtual visit of award-winning author, Anthony McGowan to students in Year 8.

Anthony joined us for an hour via Zoom, appearing on our interactive whiteboards. He talked about his writing career, giving hints & tips along the way, and he focused on his book, 'Lark' which all our students have either read in class or looked at during a shared reads lesson. Students had prepared questions for him which he was very impressed with. Students who are self-isolating were also able to join, one of the benefits of a virtual visit.

'Lark' is this year's winner of the 'Carnegie' Award and Anthony has been in high demand so we truly appreciate him taking the time to visit us.

Library Lessons

Mrs Perrin, our librarian, has been working with Year 7 & 8 students and giving a refresher about how to use our online library, Accessit, and also completing a 'Reading Health Check' which involved thinking and reflecting about favourite books, where they read, what they read and what they have enjoyed. Sometimes, reflecting back helps to focus on making choices in the future and that includes how to chose a book.

Year 9 students have been learning how to spot Fake News identifiers and why that is important. Next year, Mrs Perrin will be teaching a series of lessons about to research subjects efficiently and effectively.

Click & Collect and borrowing information

Our Click & Collect system is still popular despite the library remaining closed to students. Students may call into the library to collect their books at break, lunchtimes or after school.

Students may take books home over the holidays. They are allowed a maximum of three books of any sort so please encourage your child to make a request via Accessit as soon as possible so they aren't empty-handed over the holidays. Here is the library newsletter which explains how Accessit works.

We also have ebooks and audiobooks available either to download on a desktop or laptop, or via the free app onto a tablet or phone. Here is the link to the app, available on Android or Apple devices. There are over 2300 titles available, so there is plenty of choice.

And finally...

It has been a delight to be able to open the library at lunchtimes and after school for up to 25 students from Year 11 to study or read. The library has come alive again.
