Extension tasks: Plate Tectonics

Choose one of the following Extension tasks to complete in your own time. These need to be completed before the Christmas Holidays.

1) Create a 3-D model of a tectonic feature (e.g. Plate boundary, volcano, Earth) to show how it works from the surface into the Earth's interior. This can be made from anything you can find (e.g. playdoh, cardboard, lego, food, etc) but you need to label the key features you model is showing. Research online to get some ideas.

2) Design a web page that could be used to promote tourism in a country recovering from a tectonic event (e.g. earthquake, tsunami, volcano).

3) Create a detailed fact file for each type of plate boundary covered in lessons. To get some inspiration and further detail, use the following interactive website:

4) The world has changed drastically from when it formed 4.6 billion years ago. Imagine you have invented a time machine that can only go back in time. Choose one of the following options:

  • Write a journal entry about a week on Earth to your chosen time period (e.g. Jurassic)

  • Create a poster for 'time travel holidays' to advertise the best time period to go and visit

  • Write a script for a radio advertisement / news report describing the best time periods to visit

You will need to do some research into your chosen time period.

You need to include a reference list of all of the sources you used to help you research and complete your task. This means a list of any books, websites, articles or other sources you used. This should be on a separate sheet attached to your chosen task.
