Isometric drawing

Drawing an object in three dimensions is a useful way of presenting designs/drawings. These can be drawn as a free hand sketch or a formal drawing. An oblique sketch puts more focus on the face or front of an object while an isometric sketch puts more focus on the edge of an object.

Isometric drawings are used to explain how something works. In order for a design to appear three dimensional, a 30 degree angle is applied to its sides. Isometric drawings are commonly used by Architects, Interior designers, Game Designers, and Infographics.

There are three main rules to isometric drawing:

  • horizontal edges are drawn at 30 degrees

  • vertical edges are drawn as vertical lines

  • parallel edges appear as parallel lines

1. Isometric Drawing Task

  • Take your 2D robot idea and create an isometric free hand drawing.

  • Use the the grid paper to help you.

  • Think about the outcome you are going to make - how does it join together?

  • If you're a fast finisher you can render your drawing
