Exhibit emerging teaching and leadership skills by disseminating knowledge of client centered practice and safety to future clinicians.
Goal 1 and Goal 2 focused on the audiences of clients and professional communities. For Goal 3, I decided to round out my ePortfolio by focusing on future OTs. After one builds a strong foundation and walls, a roof is added to provide shelter for those inside. It is important to sequence the construction of a house in the correct order: setting the foundation, framing the walls, and then building the roof. If built out of order, the house will not be structurally sound. Similarly, one must build knowledge before they can next create resources for aging populations and disseminate their information to other clinicians and students.
I aim to expand my career within the academic realm, which is why my third goal is focused on leadership skills and teaching others. To further gain competence in professional teaching and leadership skills, I (1) created and presented two academic style presentations to future clinicians and (2) created an entry-level guideline regarding patient safety precautions. My academic presentations were thoughtfully structured to convey concepts, foster critical thinking, and promote active engagement among the student audience. These two academic presentations were selected to exemplify my advanced competence in patient safety from the hospital to home, enabling me to acquire the skills necessary for presenting in other academic and conference environments.
I used my experiences from the academic presentations to clarify what entry level practitioners need: information that can be directly implemented during fieldwork experiences and new employment. This guideline includes evidence-based practices, practical insights, and actionable recommendations aimed at promoting a culture of safety in acute care settings. Through these initiatives, I demonstrated emerging teaching and leadership abilities to equip future clinicians with the knowledge necessary for prioritizing safety. This relates to AOTA Standard for Continuing Competence area of professional reasoning and interpersonal skills.
