Employ advanced understanding of client safety issues from the hospital to home through evidence-based research and by developing resources for clients.
My goals intentionally build from disseminating safety information to clients first (Goal 1), then the professional community (Goal 2), and finally to our future OTs (Goal 3). For this first goal, I aimed to focus on the audience of the client. After all, building a foundation of a house relates to building a foundation of knowledge because this initial step is critical for future success.
To demonstrate advanced competence in patient safety, I chose to highlight two resources that focus heavily on fall prevention. In order to gain and employ advanced knowledge, I (1) developed a Fall Prevention Tips & Tricks Resource, and (2) created a Beware of Black Ice Resource. I learned a lot throughout the journey of achieving the goal of enhancing client safety from hospital to home. By leveraging evidence-based research, I crafted comprehensive guides addressing fall prevention strategies and the risks of black ice, respectively. These resources offer practical advice and visual aids to enhance understanding and to empower clients in mitigating safety risks during and after their transition home. By applying advanced understanding and collaborating with experts, I ensured the effectiveness and relevance of the resources, providing valuable support for clients in safeguarding their well-being. These efforts align with the AOTA Standard for Continuing Competence of knowledge, performance skills, and interpersonal skills.
