NYU Classes: Media Gallery and NYU Stream

NYU Classes: Media Gallery

The Media Gallery tool enables you to easily create and upload videos, using your laptop and webcam. You can also add public YouTube videos with this tool. The Media Gallery is not only a place where you can share videos with students, but it can also be used for students to share videos with the class!

Rich Text Editor

No, that heading is not a typo. Did you know you can embed videos directly into your course site by using the “filmstrip” icon available in the rich text editor? That’s the box with rows of formatting icons that appears whenever you add “text” to a Lessons page, among other areas in NYU Classes (e.g. when adding written instructions to your Assignments). If you want to add a video directly to your Lessons page, “Add text” is the way to do it. For more detailed information about NYU Stream integration in NYU Classes, read our Knowledge Base Article here!

Commenting on Media

Using Annoto, available through the NYU Stream integration, you and your students can add comments to a video and respond to one other. This is another place where students can engage actively by commenting on, not just passively viewing, your lecture or other instructional videos. Again, this won’t be intuitive to students, so if you’d like them to comment, consider how you’ll introduce this practice. Here’s a short video on Annoto to see it in action. For more detailed information on using Annoto, read our Knowledge Base Article here!

Pro Tip: Create a Course Site Tour Video

At this point, you might have done a lot of work on your NYU Classes course site. Hooray! However, think back to where you started. Was any of this intuitive? Will it be intuitive to your students? Consider creating a course tour video using the "record screen" feature of NYU Stream to show, rather than tell, students how to find the most important things in your site. Some ideas are included below.

  • How to use Lessons to navigate through content pages and activities

  • How to navigate through all of the "to do" tasks such as Assignments to turn in work, and Zoom to join synchronous online class meetings

  • How to post to a Discussion Topic

Remember, you can also encourage students to comment on that video by using the Annoto integration.
