NYU Classes: Communication Tools

What Communication Tool Should I Use?

Watch this communications tutorial video to learn more about the differences between Announcements and Messages in NYU Classes.

Announcements: One-way Email blast

Send a one-way email blast to your entire class with the Announcements tool. Students will not be able to reply to announcements. Consider the amount of content (how much you'll include in each announcement) and timing (how often you'll post announcements) as you learn about this tool.

One recommendation is to send a weekly announcement, orienting students to the learning goals and materials for that week. You may also want to send shorter, more frequent (daily or every other day) announcements with specific updates.

Last but not least, consider using video in your announcements. This can go a long way to building connections with your students, and reminding them that their instructor is a real person who cares about them, not a robot.

Messages

The NYU Classes Messages tool offers a built-in address book so that you never need to look up students’ email addresses. You may use the Messages tool, in addition to your NYU email, to communicate directly with students. Students can also use the Messages tool to communicate with their peers or group project teams.

Discussion Forums

Discussion Forums are an excellent way to leverage the power of asynchronous technology and communication techniques to foster student-to-student connections. In fact, they deserve their own page, because this one is getting pretty long. Check it out below!
