NEW: NYU Classes Meets Zoom...check out our new page for Zoom tips and tricks!
As NYU faculty and staff who support instructional design and delivery, we know that learning how to use the NYU Classes learning management system for remote teaching can be overwhelming and a bit scary. We're here to break down those barriers to learning and ongoing professional development.
This Google Site is a supplement to the NYU Classes Training for Faculty & Staff website, and our primary goal for this site is to share best practices and tips & tricks for remote instruction, all focused on NYU Classes.
You might be wondering...who are we to tell you how to use technology to enhance your teaching, and why should you listen to us? Allow us to introduce just one of the many experts on the NYU Classes Service Team. To reach the broader team, complete an appointment request form at nyu.edu/studio. We love working 1:1 with faculty and staff to help you make the most of your NYU Classes course site by brainstorming ideas and providing pedagogical, how to teach online guidance. We've also got a team of fantastic student employees who will happily share the student perspective and advice on what you can do as an instructor to improve your site!
Open the embedded Google Doc checklist (below or on the right, depending on your device) and go to "File" in the top-left menu. Select "make a copy," and rename the file to something you're likely to remember. Voila! you can now add, delete, and customize the checklist to suit your needs.
Pro Tip: Did you know that you changing the suffix of a Google Doc from "edit" to "copy" will prompt users to make a copy right away, saving you from needing to share these instructions with your students? Your NYU Classes course site development work will be much easier if you gather and organize your content elsewhere first.
Once you've set up your course site, selected the tools you intend to use, and gathered your content (perhaps not everything, but a solid start), where you go from here is up to you. There's no "one way" to create a course site, and there is no such thing as a "perfect" course site. Below, you'll find pages that offer best practices for each of the most common tools within NYU Classes. It may be helpful to think of your course site development as an iterative process. Start simple, and take breaks. Leave yourself notes and reminders in your custom checklist (as explained above). And remember, the Digital Studio is here to help! Visit us at nyu.edu/studio.
