With regards to pest control, Lafayette Hall maintains a very clean atmosphere, and strives to keep it that way. Our contracted extermination partners proactively visit each suite throughout the year, week-to-week, applying pest control treatments. These treatments are not toxic to humans. Lafayette is proactive and extremely reactive to reports of any insect sightings due to our location in Lower Manhattan, an ecosystem that frankly has it's share of critters. Please help deter any unwanted pests inside of the hall by
regularly disposing of your apartment trash multiple times per week
do not leave food to sit out for lengthy periods of time
maintain an active cleaning schedule with your suitemates that includes sweeping, mopping, and proper sanitation of kitchen and bathroom facilities
Lafayette Hall does not have central air conditioning but there are AC units in every bedroom. To operate, you must turn on the SWITCH located on the wall below the AC unit (or sometimes the adjacent wall to the AC unit wall). This switch appears to be a standard light switch. Once on, you may use your AC remote to adjust the AC settings. Please be aware that a small percentage of AC units may not come standard with remotes, but worry not because these units provide excellent cooling to the space with just the switch alone.
To preserve the life and function of your AC unit, we highly encourage residents to turn off their air conditioning units while the apartment is vacant. Leaving your AC running 24 hours for days on end will likely overload the unit, causing it to malfunction, and replacement could take up to 2 to 3 days depending on the volume of requests coming in across campus. Our best practice is to only use the AC unit while present in the space.
For air conditioning concerns, do submit an online work request promptly.
Two trash chutes are located on each floor (save for one on the 18th floor). Please discard any garbage down these chutes.
Recyclables can be discarded in the recycling rooms located on each floor. Please breakdown and flatten all cardboard boxes before stacking them neatly in the recycling room.
Lafayette Hall is home to nearly 1,100 students during the academic year and over 900 residents over the summer--that's an amazing 2,000 people! Please be mindful that your home of two to three months is someone else's home for the better part of the year. Please be kind and considerate to the walls, paint, floors, furniture and general aesthetics of your space. Residents found responsible for damages to their rooms will incur fees on their bill for residence.
Refrain from using 3M hooks or adhesives on the walls. We encourage residents to only use painter's tape to adhere lightweight items.
In the rare event of a possible toilet tank overflow, residents can turn the water shut-off valve on the rear wall of their toilet. A similar valve exists in the kitchen for the kitchen sink. After shutting off the water, go to the Resource Center (or Public Safety desk after hours) to alert a team member right away. Our facilities will have the matter addressed promptly.
Usually only once each summer, the city of New York notifies Lafayette Hall that water to the entire building will be shut off overnight, usually from midnight until early morning around 6:00am. This notice comes to Lafayette Hall and surrounding buildings the day-of with no advance notice. We communicate this to the building's residents via email immediately, but we certainly understand the inconvenience caused. Again, although this is rare, we thank you in advance for your patience as the city requires these measures to complete major surrounding plumbing projects.
All residence halls at NYU have a Campus Safety officer stationed at every main entrance. Residents must tap into the building with their NYU IDs to proceed through the turnstiles.
Public Safety may be reached 24/7 at (212) 998-2222.
