If you are visiting NYU from a different university or institution, the rules and policies are probably different! It is each resident's responsibility to familiarize themselves with NYU Residential Life & Housing Services policies which also include our guest policy, and our larger scope policies through the Office of Community Standards.
Within the first two weeks of the prior summer of 2017, Lafayette Hall unfortunately witnessed more Non-NYU residents (from other universities) transported to the hospital for alcohol poisoning than our hall had experienced during the entire nine-month academic year. Such behavior is not only unacceptable, it is also extremely dangerous and concerning to our team who cares deeply for the safety of our residents year-round.
Underage drinking is the most common violation of new Non-NYU summer residents, and they are often shocked when they learn that due to their decision to violate the alcohol policy, they are thus removed from University Housing effective immediately. Alcohol and drug use are absolutely zero tolerance for summer residents. Please be clear on the rules around alcohol in our summer policies.
If you are not at least 21 years of age, you may not possess, consume, or be in the presence of alcohol.
If all members of the suite (apartment) are of legal drinking age, one may consume and store alcohol in the common areas. However, if even one resident of the suite is underage, alcohol may not be stored in the common areas, rather it should be reserved to the bedrooms of those residents of legal drinking age.
As the host, you are responsible for knowing the ages of your guests. If they are not at least 21 years of age, they are not allowed to be present.
Drinks should not be consumed outside apartments in hallways, elevators, nor in the lounge.
Drinking games such as beer pong, kings cup, flip cup, etc. are prohibited.
Smoking of tobacco, e-cigarettes and marijuana is also prohibited, resulting in similar outcomes within our conduct process.
