“Instructional analysis is a set of procedures that, when applied to an instructional goal, results in the identification of the relevant steps for performing a goal and the subordinate skills required for a student to achieve the goal” (Dick, Carey, & Carey, 2011)
Our team adopted the instructional analysis model of Dick, Carey, and Carey (2011), which involved a goals analysis and a subordinate skills analysis.
Goal Analysis
To highlight effective communication, we used the American Management's Association's "Five Steps to Conflict Resolution"
Ensuring proficiency of the steps above will ensure students gain the skills to work with students in the classroom, as well as form solid building blocks throughout their educational and professional career.
Subordinate Skills Analysis
We then identified which step required the subordinate skills of Empathy, Self Advocacy, and Active Listening.
Through our task analysis, we were able to verify the knowledge gaps (identified in the needs analysis) within the conflict resolution model above. We then arrived at the following learning objectives:
Students will perform effective conflict resolution tactics such as regulating their emotions, active listening, and methods for resolving issues.
Students will brainstorm and evaluate alternative solutions to resolve conflicts collaboratively and creatively.
