Students working on conflict resolution skills would benefit from working with a professional who specializes in addressing the unique needs of teens. This professional will bring relevant experience as well as a level of understanding that will help guide these students through this critical developmental stage. We believe that in-person interaction provides opportunities for deeper connections while also fostering a supportive learning environment. We would be remiss if we did not include a hybrid option as it not only accommodates diverse learning styles but also allows students who may not be able to attend in-person the option to participate remotely.
The seminar will be broken up into 8 hybrid sessions that will be held on Friday from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm and Saturday morning from 10:00 am-12:00 (noon).
Media and Technology
Video: Video-based learning is a great tool for instructors to effectively convey information to the students participating in the Heart to Heart seminar. In an effort to enhance the learning experience for the students participating in our seminar, we will use videos to depict real-life scenarios that students can analyze using activities like Think-Pair-Share. Video content can also be used to teach conflict resolution skills through animated skits that challenge participants to utilize their critical-thinking skills. After each session, the videos can uploaded to online platforms like YouTube that students can refer back to to find the information covered in the session. The affordances of using this form of technology are:
Active Engagement
Self-Paced Learning
Flexibility
Text: Students who participate in the Heart to Heart seminar will be encouraged to document their feelings and concerns through journal activities at the end of each session. This reflective practice allows students to process their emotions as well as develop the competencies to identify areas where they can improve. Students will have the option to complete journal entries using traditional notebooks or through journaling applications like Notability that can be used on multiple devices: smartphones, tablets and computers. The affordances of using this form of technology is:
Self-awareness
Data Analysis and Synthesis
Personal Reflection
Social Media: Social media platforms is a useful tool as it's not only a popular medium but also can be used to facilitate discussions and collaboration among students. We will utilize social media platforms like Twitter(X) and Forumotion to pose questions to create private group chats and forums where students can seek advice from peers, provide support to one another, share conflict resolutions strategies and discuss personal experiences with complex situations. The affordances of using social media platforms are:
Digital Story Telling
Content Creation
Collaborative Information Discovery
Private Social Media Groups
Journaling Activities
These journaling prompts are designed to encourage students to reflect on their experiences, understand their own conflict resolution tendencies, and explore ways to improve their skills and understanding of conflict resolution.
Week 1: Reflect on a Recent Conflict
Describe a recent conflict you've experienced. What emotions did you feel during the conflict? How did you respond? Looking back, would you handle the situation differently? What conflict resolution skills could you apply next time?
Week 2: Identify Your Conflict Resolution Style
Think about a conflict you've faced in the past. What conflict resolution style did you naturally gravitate towards (avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, collaboration)? Describe the situation and explain why you chose that particular style. How effective was it? Would you choose a different style next time?
Week 3: Empathy and Understanding
Recall a conflict where understanding the other person's perspective helped in resolving the issue. How did you show empathy towards their feelings and needs? How did it impact the outcome of the conflict? Discuss the importance of empathy in conflict resolution and how you can cultivate it further.
Week 4: Conflict Resolution Skills in Action
Imagine a hypothetical conflict scenario where you have the opportunity to apply conflict resolution skills. Describe the situation and outline the steps you would take to resolve the conflict. Consider communication strategies, negotiation techniques, and any other conflict resolution skills you've learned. Reflect on how you think the situation would unfold based on your approach.
Learner Assessments
What is being assessed
Students ability to learn conflict resolution skills and apply them to real-life/role play situations
Students ability to analyze complex situations and components to conflict resolution
Peer Evaluation: Students will watch a role play scenario(virtually or in-person) which is acted out by classmates. After viewing the scenario the students will evaluate their classmates ability to maintain their composure as well as effectively come to a compromise. Students will use digital journals so that they can explain how this experience impacted them.
Media to be used: Online journaling platform(Notability), Zoom Sessions (Hybrid Class), Pre-Recorded videos of Conflicts (For classmates who have stage fright)
