As the culmination of your graduate studies in ETED approaches, you will develop a curriculum project under advisement from your academic advisor. The goal of the culminating project is to make sense, on your own terms, of the duality of the ETED degree, by reflecting on the integration of the art form of theatre into the English classroom. This should take the form of a ten to fifteen page paper in which you will discuss some aspect of your teaching and learning, discoveries made and challenges encountered therein.
Inspiration for this paper is usually found in the secondary school placement where a certain project is undertaken in which you have been able to use dramatic activities to teach English language arts. However, not all English classrooms are amenable to full use of drama, and in this case, you may want to refer to your elementary placement, if indeed drama was successfully integrated into the curriculum.
While you may want to include lesson or unit plans to exemplify your discussion, this is not required. Your main focus should be on reflecting how you have grown as a teacher and learner in this program of study. This project has taken on many manifestations, and therefore is open ended with the belief that you will benefit most from writing subjectively about your own experience and ideas.
Some past topics have included:
Incorporating mock trials into the curriculum
Cultivating literacy through dramatic play in exploring Lowry’s The Giver
Teaching Ibsen’s A Doll’s House at the Young Women’s Leadership School
Male/female relationship and gender roles in literature through dramatic role play
The power of playwriting: words in action
The intersection of read-aloud and reader’s theatre
The role of dramatic activities in teaching Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar
Use of constructivist theory in an integrated drama and English language curriculum
These are only examples, and you need to discover your own topic, which will be an invaluable record of the work you have done in your master’s degree. If you have any questions, would like to peruse samples of other culminating projects, or would like to discuss or brainstorm about your idea, please contact Dr. Nan Smithner, advisor for the ETED program at ns23@nyu.edu.
The project is due to Dr. Smithner one week before the end of the semester in which you plan to graduate, so your graduation clearance form can be submitted. If you would like feedback on your project, you can schedule an appointment no sooner than one month after you have handed the project in.
