Educational Theatre with Initial Certification in Theatre, All Grades and English, 7-12
Open only to educational theatre majors in Steinhardt, this dual degree allows you to earn your bachelor of science in Educational Theatre and your master of arts in Educational Theatre in only five years, saving you both time and money. Upon graduation, you’ll have both a bachelor of science and a master of arts degree, and be eligible for New York State licensure and certification as a teacher of theatre, all grades and English, grades 6-12.
BS students can apply as early as the spring of their sophomore year and as late as the fall of their senior year. Double majors whose primary school/major is not Steinhardt/Educational Theatre and students in the Ed Theatre Minor are not eligible.
Notes:
This program of study is only in effect for students who officially enrolled in the Dual Degree program while an undergraduate student in the Program in Educational Theatre.
In order for courses to count towards both the BS and MA programs, students must have received a grade of B or better in the course.

What You’ll Learn
You will choose to concentrate your BS studies in the Drama in Education pathway – and demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in a culminating field experience and senior seminar. Your curriculum includes integrated course work in Drama and English Education, which is tied to the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, ensuring that you study:
Dramatic literature
Theatre production and performance
Drama in education
Theatre and literature for young audiences
How to explore ideas and concepts in novels and plays through drama and theatre strategies
Pedagogical tools for teaching English language learning, including linguistics, expository writing and reading
Classroom strategies that are innovative and appropriate for teaching today's middle and high school students
Throughout your degree, you’ll gain:
A foundation in educational theatre, acting, directing, theatre history, stagecraft, and design
A full liberal arts education with core courses in history, philosophy, language, literature, sociology, science, and math
An investigation of options for teaching or performing in a wide range of contexts
Note that all students in this program are required to complete two semesters of student teaching, a culminating project, and demonstrate proficiency towards NYU Steinhardt's Learning to Teach Framework through successful completion of the Ed Theatre Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA).

Upon graduation from this dual degree option, you'll be eligible for New York State initial teaching certification as a teacher of English, grades 7-12, and Theatre, all grades (Pre-K – 12). Learn more about teacher certification and our degree's accreditation. Graduates of our program are teachers of drama to elementary, middle, and high school students and English in secondary schools.
