The MA program in Teaching Theatre, All Grades and English, 7-12, is a 45-credit curriculum that responds to the many opportunities available in the New York City area and across the country for English teachers at the middle and high school levels. The need for modes of artistic expression that lead toward literate engagements with texts has never been greater than it is today. Concerns that technologies such as film, television, and the Internet are replacing basic reading and writing skills can be addressed by providing opportunities for students to explore ideas and concepts in the novels and plays they read in the English classroom through drama and theatre strategies. The curriculum reflects a collaborative integration of coursework offered by the Program in Educational Theatre and the Program in English Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Graduates are eligible for dual certification in New York State in Teaching Theatre, all grades and Teaching English, grades 7-12.
Note that all students in this program are required to complete two semesters of student teaching, a culminating project, and demonstrate proficiency towards NYU Steinhardt's Learning to Teach Framework through successful completion of the Ed Theatre Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA).
Successful completion of this program enables you to be eligible for New York State initial teaching certification as a teacher of English, grades 7-12, and Theatre, all grades (Pre-K – 12). Learn more about teacher certification and our degree's accreditation.
