Graduate-level classes offered by MCC or another department may be allocated as electives toward the MCC M.A. degree. In order to qualify as an elective, a class offered by a department outside MCC must be:
Graduate-level
Directly related to your course of study
Approved by the graduate advising staff
There are two steps to request a course outside the department:
Is the course approved as an elective for the MCC degree?
If you plan on taking a non-MCC elective you MUST first receive approval from your MCC advisor. Failure to do so may create problems as you approach graduation. To receive approval:
Complete the following Elective Approval Form.
You must provide the course number, title, and how this course supports your academic/professional goals.
2. Does the department offering the course allow non-majors to take the course?
After you receive approval from MCC:
First, try to register for the course in Albert.
If that doesn’t work, contact the department to find out if they allow non-majors to take the course and, if so, how you can register.
Review contact information below for course registration outside of MCC/Steinhardt
Note: Each NYU department handles this process differently with separate registration procedures. It is your responsibility to ensure that a course outside the department is a graduate-level course and counts as an approved elective.
Stern School of Business
Please be aware that Stern Graduate School uses a different Calendar. The Stern Graduate Cross-Registration period will be announced shortly.
Real-time updates of Stern course info is found on the Stern website, not Albert. See Course Schedule
Before registering for courses at the Stern Graduate School, please confirm with your advisor that you have met the requisites for the course(s).
SPS Course Registration
To register for a course within the Division of Programs in Business (DPB) at the School of Professional Studies (SPS), please contact spsdpb.advising@nyu.edu to request a registration survey.
Below you will find a list of all NYU schools and the associated departments that have housed previously approved electives. You still need to complete the Elective Approval form if you are interested in registering for a course in one of these departments, and will be asked to describe your academic and/or professional reasons for enrolling.
