What has compost got to do with biodiversity and being sustainable?
Chen Chingwei is a Singapore-born Australia-based permaculturist, and a soil and compost nerd. She has lived in urban and rural environments, and has 10 years experience of making compost and regenerating soil. She is also passionate about growing food for people and creating habitats for wildlife. Chingwei is a firm believer in the importance of compost as a “tool” to enable soils to better sequester carbon. In 2020, she returned to Singapore to co-lead Project Black Gold, a community food scrap composting project to create awareness and encourage more people to become compost makers.
Cuifen is crafting a life where she practices choices and actions that are better for the health of the Earth, communities and self. She co-leads community-based initiatives that encourage people to step out and discover Singapore’s food system, and take simple actions like natural gardening and community composting to make our shared Home a place we love to be in. Through Food Citizen, Cuifen works with others in Singapore and the region to bring community-based knowledge to more people. Cuifen has spoken at schools and leadership programs on diverse topics including climate action, nature, sustainable living, personal leadership, and mental wellness.
