The twinkling lights of England fascinate Gabby as she peers through her window. Raindrops drip everywhere. Drip. Drip. Drip. People bustle and hustle to places. This was the life of sixth grader, Gabby Lowe, before she moved here to Vegas.
Gabby is adapting and transitioning to the new changes and environment since she moved here from England. She is getting used to the differences between the environment, people, and schools.
Gabby said that things are very different in America. England always gets rain, the houses are much smaller and closer together, and people are able to walk everywhere because everything is so close. “It’s very different. The schools are much larger here,” said Gabby. In fact, in England, the schools only have about 160-180 kids, and they have to wear uniforms. The buildings are very fancy, and they are almost always made out of brick. The schools were castle-like on the outside, and business on the inside. On the other hand, schools in the US have hundreds of kids, and it’s normally free dress (“A Virtual School Day at Woodlands Junior High”).
Gabby moved here because her parents wanted her to get a great experience in the US. They wanted her to experience the big country, hot weather, and different cultures and habits. “My parents wanted me to have the unique experience of the different climate and setting,” said Gabby.
Gabby sees herself here in the future, but she might go back to England to go to a university for college. When she goes back to England, she wants to see her friends and family again. “I’m going to stay here because I feel like I can travel the world without always having to go on an airplane. Later, I plan on going to a university in England.” The universities are very similar here and in England. They both have the same goal of teaching young adults to be successful and pursuing a career of which they chose and love.
Gabby’s friend, Emma Mele, noticed that she is adapting to the changes very well. Emma said that Gabby loves all of her classes, and it hasn’t been a difficult transition because she went on vacation here all the time. “She’s always extremely happy and positive. I can’t imagine how hard adapting would be, but she is doing a great job keeping a smile on her face and looking forward,” said Emma Mele.
Mrs. Adams, sixth grade English Language Arts teacher, commented on how well Gabby is doing since she has moved here from England. “She is a great student,” said Mrs. Adams, “and if she needs help, she always asks for clarification.”
Gabby Lowe, a young girl who moved here from England, has found many ways to adjust to the drastic changes in this new country. She is loving it here and is excited to go on adventures. There are many similarities and differences between England and Vegas, but Gabby just sees it as a way to seek new opportunities and journeys. “Moving here was very hard, but if there is one thing I learned so far, it would be to take risks, go on adventures, and always try find the better in things,” said Gabby.
