Both sports drinks and water are used to energize and hydrate athletes when exercising, but which is better? Water is the better choice for athletes because it is more hydrating and sports drinks can be unhealthy when consumed without enough exercise.
Although sports drinks contain electrolytes, water is better for hydration. Your body needs to replenish the water lost during exercise. It is known that, “water makes up the majority of your body weight and is critical for your body’s proper functioning” (healthline.com). Water is the most logical drink for hydration rather than sports drinks. “The average person should be drinking eight to twelve ounces of water each hour during the heat of summer. If you are working in the heat for several hours, Dr. Nish suggests you consume 12 to 16 ounces a couple hours before work" (unitypoint.org). Drinking sports drinks more often than water won’t give athletes the right amount of hydration needed.
Those people that don’t exercise enough, gain weight from the carbohydrates and electrolytes that are absorbed. Sports drinks are high in sugar and only give people that exercise the right amount of carbohydrates. “These drinks were never intended to be consumed by the general public, but unfortunately, they have been marketed to the masses with the underlying message that if you drink these, you will become a great athlete like Michael Jordan. Unfortunately, most people gain weight,” said Andrew Nish, MD.
This proves how much sports drinks weren’t supposed to be introduced to the public, but were anyway.
Water hydrates athletes which prevents dehydration, while sports drinks can cause weight being gained. Overall, water is healthier and more effective to keep athletes involved.

Girls Lacrosse has been receiving a lot more attention lately due to their victory at last year’s championships. Girls lacrosse has been around at Bob Miller for a long time and they are receiving more attention this year because last year they beat every other team and won the girls lacrosse championship.
This year the Girls Lacrosse team started in January. Each week they have 3 practices on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. They have games every Saturday until championships which are held in May. There are 18 members, 7 of which are returning members from last year. Five are 8th graders and 2 are in 7th grade.
One of the players, Natalie Hubert, 8th grader, said, “My favorite part of lacrosse is the adrenaline rush and excitement I get when I’m playing a game.” Natalie’s been playing lacrosse for 2 years and she is currently in her 4th season.
Two other new players, Ava Thrasher and Ciana Alvarez, 8th graders, both explained that they are excited to play and learn more about lacrosse. “It’s a lot of fun and I like playing defense,” says Ava Thrasher, 8th grader. The team played the first game of the year on Saturday, March 2nd at Oxford Park. They lost the first game but won the second game.
