Canvas LMS: What is Canvas? An Introduction for Parents
As we move into distance learning, we will use Canvas, a learning management system that students will use to learn content, access assignments, take quizzes and participate in live classes.
This session will include a brief introduction to Canvas for parents, what features can be viewed in Canvas, how to download the parent and student Canvas app, and where to find additional information.
Teachers will use Canvas in different ways for content and assignment delivery, but all teachers will post their weekly agenda and their Google Meet join links on their Canvas homepage. From here, some teachers are using Canvas to deliver their content and assignments while other teachers will continue to utilize Google Classroom for assignments.
How to make a parent observer account in Canvas:
1. Follow these directions to get the pairing code.
2. Go to one of these links and sign up with “Parents get accounts too, Click Here!”:
For elementary: https://esccsd.instructure.com/login/canvas#login
For middle school: https://msccsd.instructure.com/login/canvas#login
For high school: https://hsccsd.instructure.com/login/canvas#login
3. You must click Start Participating, NOT ENTER!
Warning! Sometimes when you click on things the es or ms or hs go away! They must be there to work. If you get “invalid pairing code” check for those 2 little letters.
To add an additional child go to account->observing and add another code. After you figure it out, please help someone else.
What does Canvas provide for me as a parent or guardian?
We encourage you to create an “Observer” account which allows you to be involved in your child's education by being an observer to how your child is using Canvas as a learner. As an observer, you can:
view the timeliness, quantity and quality of student work submitted to Canvas
view the grade earned and teacher's feedback either in
text format feedback
audio format feedback
video format feedback
access this all by computer, tablet or mobile device.
Notifications
In addition to viewing details about student work, Canvas is an post-office delivery service of school communication. As you register your child/ren under a single Canvas Observer account that you sign-up for you can decide how often and in what format you want to receive updates, or Notifications. Do you prefer them:
in email format? in text message format?
using the Canvas Mobile Device App and its push notifications?
Right-away? Weekly? or in a daily summary for you to scan through at night
or on your computer by logging into Canvas to check the Canvas Dashboard for updates?
