The Buddha: the name given to Buddhism's founder, and meaning 'Enlightened One'.
Dharma: the Buddha's teachings and doctrines.
Sangha: the community or congregation of monks or nuns, and in general the Buddhist community.
Buddhists take refuge in the Three Jewels, also called the Triple Gem. 'Taking refuge' means 'being guided' by Buddha, Dharma and the Sangha.
Suffering exists (Dukka), and is a necessary attribute of life which experiences feeling. To live means to suffer. Neither human nature nor the world in which people live is perfect. Pain and suffering are part of life.
Suffering is caused by passions or cravings for the things of this world, the transient world. All these things are eventually lost, because they too are transient.
Suffering ends with the extinction of passion or cravings. This is also the effect of happiness. The best way to remove suffering is to remove its cause. Therefore, the extinction of cravings for transient things and ideas ends suffering.
The Eightfold Path leads to the extinction of passion and is the means to the end of suffering and the cause of happiness. It is the balance between over indulgence and asceticism. The Eightfold Path leads to Nirvana.
Although referred to as steps on a path, is not meant as a sequential learning process,
Instead, they are eight aspects of life
All are to be integrated in everyday life
Purpose: to create an environment to move closer to the Buddhist path.
