The Friday Prayer consists of a weekly religious service that includes a sermon (khutbah) and a communal prayer. Muslim males are obligated to attend this prayer every week on Fridays.
First call to prayer (adhan): The first call to prayer is given at the time of Friday Prayer by the Caller to Prayer (muezzin).
Second call to prayer (adhan): The second call to prayer is given by the muezzin.
Sermon (khutbah): A sermon is given at the mosque by the Prayer Leader (imam).
Call to start prayer (iqaama): Just before the congregational Friday Prayer is about to begin, a shorter version of the call to prayer is given by the muezzin which is called the iqaama.
Congregational Friday Prayer (salat ul-jumu’ah): The Friday Prayer is conducted in congregation.
As Sunday is for Christians and Saturday for Jews, Friday is the holy day for Muslims. Muslims believe there are various reasons that all contribute to the significance of Friday:
God created Adam on Friday and he was granted entry into heaven on Friday.
Adam was sent to earth on this day as his vicegerent.
Adam died on a Friday
There is a blessed hour on Friday during which a person is granted anything lawful and good by God that he prays for
The blessed hour on Friday is such that supplications are answered and accepted.
The Day of Resurrection will be on a Friday.
One of the most important components of the Friday prayer is the reminder of the 5th essential belief – afterlife.
The collective, compulsory gathering of people facing God symbolises judgement day.
