Working on a KRF sponsored project titled "The identification of integrated reaction mechanism for the reductive degradation of chlorinated organic compounds by the interactions between iron reducing bacteria and iron-bearing soil minerals in natural system".  The purpose of this research is to investigate the reaction mechanism between iron reducing bacteria and iron bearing soil minerals in the reductive degradation of chlorinated organic compounds for developing economic and efficient soil remediation technology.

Working on a KMOCT sponsored project titled "The development of urban environmental regeneration technology (High-Tech Urban Development Program)".  The purpose of this research is to select or develop the best available technology in urban regeneration and establish the most efficient method of soil remediation for regenerating a city.

Working on a KMOST sponsored project titled "Study on Geochemical and Mechanical Behavior of Gas Hydrate-bearing Sediments.  The purpose of this research is to explore the geochemical and mechanical behavior of hydrate-bearing sediments. Microscale characteristics are identified using chemical speciation model and geophysical method, and eventually the macroscale behavior of hydrate-bearing sediments are evaluated for economic operation of off-shore hydrate production.

Working on a KMOE sponsored project titled “Natural Attenuation of Groundwater and Soil Contaminated with Toxic Chemical Compounds by Natural Reductants (3rd yr, 2005)” by managing and advising a research group. The goals of this research are to characterize the natural attenuation of contaminated groundwater and soil by natural reductants and to provide basic knowledge for the development of remedial technologies.

-Worked on a KMOE sponsored project titled “Natural Attenuation of Groundwater and Soil Contaminated with Toxic Chemical Compounds by Natural Reductants (1st yr, 2004)” by managing and advising a research group.


-Worked on a KIST sponsored project titled “Development of Toxic Contaminant Control Technologies Using Catalytic Nano-particles” by managing and advising research groups involved in the project. The goal of this research is to develop efficient and cost effective technologies to remove and control toxic organic and inorganic contaminants using catalytic nano-particles.


-Worked on a KMOST sponsored project (i.e., National Research Laboratory project) titled “A Study for Smog Mechanism and Control Technology” by advising researchers involved in this project. The goals of the research are to identify the physico-chemical mechanisms of smog formation in Seoul, Korea and to provide basic understanding for the development of control technology.

Worked on a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored project titled “Reactions of Organic Compounds with Atmospheric Oxidants” by performing the tasks of experiments and data analysis. The goals of this research are to measure gas-phase rate constants for the oxidation of biogenic hydrocarbons and PAHs by OH radical using on-line mass spectrometry, to identify the effect of temperature on the reaction kinetics, and to investigate frontier molecular orbital correlations for better understanding of ozone (O3) formation in rural and urban troposphere. This appointment also included the responsibility of teaching graduate students in class (Environmental Chemistry) and advising their experiments and thesis.

Worked on a Gulf Coast Hazardous Substance Research Center (GCHSRC) sponsored project titled “Reductive Dechlorination of Chlorinated Organics by Soil Minerals and Soil” by performing the tasks of experiments and data analysis. The goal of the research was to characterize reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organics by soil minerals and soil to obtain fundamental knowledge about dechlorination kinetics and product distribution to develop remedial technologies.

Worked on an Amarillo National Resource Center for Plutonium (ANRCP: Pantex Plant) sponsored project titled “Chemical Models and Redox Chemistry of Chromium” by performing the tasks of experiments and data analysis. The goal of the research was to identify the redox reaction of chromium in Pantex soil and to measure intrinsic and total reductive capacities of Pantex soil for Cr(VI).
