"KazCCUS" project
- Development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage technology in Kazakhstan
Carbon dioxide is a major contributor to excessive greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change. World Energy Outlook 2018 report from IEA has defined a set of technologies for climate change mitigation and it includes Carbon, Capture, Utilization and Storage. CCUS can provide the sustainable use of current fossil fuel-dependent infrastructure by utilizing or storing CO2 emissions. The “KazCCUS” project proposed by GEERG researchers will investigate CCUS potential in Kazakhstan starting from the fundamental science of CO2 utilization and storage to its implementation ways in Kazakhstan. This project has been approved by ORAU research funding for the years 2020-2023 and it includes 4 main tasks:
To evaluate the potential of Kazakhstani sedimentary basins for geological CO2 storage and identify their CO2 storage capacity
To develop a techno-economic model of CCS for Kazakhstan
To investigate the storage safety of potential storage sites with reactive transport modeling coupled with experimental studies
To develop useful ex-situ carbonation material
