From whom should I solicit campaign contributions? Remember each team needs a minimum of six and ALL members must solicit a campaign donation.
Your campaign team has to decide if you want support from various groups. Familiarize yourself with definitions of the various groups that influence elections. Remember that if you solicit support from one group, you may NOT wish to garner support from a group that has an opposing position. For example: Big Oil vs. NRDC. Staff members are portraying representatives from these groups as part of this simulation.
How do I approach a teacher (union, PAC, interest group, etc.?)
PAC/Super PAC – A political action committee can avoid finance laws and run multiple ads on your behalf. Mr. Bates can make large donations to Super PACs. Do you want ‘Big Oil’s support?
Look at the group information on the link.
Make an appointment Sign up via email AND on the sheet outside the teacher's room.
Research. What issues do your candidate and the group have in common? Is there a policy or legislation that your candidate would consider supporting? Explain why their organization should support your candidate financially and with votes. Each group will vote during the primary and general elections. Staff = 5 votes for Y and Z parties in the primaries and 5 votes in the general election.
Bring your pitch and read to the teacher (representing the group)
Leave a brochure, copy of your script, and/or bling to remind them who to vote for on election day. They can't vote for your candidate if you don't see them!
Send your campaign donation form link to the staff member AND a thank you note via email.
NO credit is earned unless you have a copy of the well-researched pitch AND the campaign contribution to your candidate.
