Honors Programs

High-achieving students may be interested in our honors program. The honors program provides an environment designed for critical inquiry and diverse thought. It gives them access to top faculty and the opportunity to live in a community of honors students in Neihardt Hall.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Composite ACT score of at least 30, or a combined SAT score of at least 1340 (Mathematics and Critical Reading Total)

  • Top 10% high school class ranking

  • Demonstrated desire for academic rigor

The Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science & Management is a highly selective academic and scholarship program that prepares students to be leaders in the technology-driven 21st century. Students will live and learn together in the Esther L. Kauffman Academic Residence Center. The Raikes School may pay the cost of a student's room and board for up to four years.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Composite ACT score of at least 31, or a combined SAT score of at least 1380 (Mathematics and Critical Reading Total); Average ACT of accepted students is a 33.5

  • Top 10% high school class ranking

  • Planned major in: computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, business, mathematics or other related fields of study

The UNL College of Business Administration Honors Academy is a unique learning environment for high-ability students with demonstrated leadership potential. Students will complete the core business courses as a cohort, mimicking a real-world business environment.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Composite ACT score of at least 27, or a combined SAT score of at least 1220 (Mathematics and Critical Reading Total)

  • Top 10% high school class ranking

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and/or potential

Priority consideration deadline is November 2, 2018.

The Honors Program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney offers exceptional students the opportunity to excel in academic, leadership, and personal development during their undergraduate career. This four-year program enriches and supplements all academic majors at the University through special classes, an Honors learning community, scholarly projects (research and creative activity), study abroad, leadership development, and service learning.

Admissions: First-time freshman may apply to the Honors Program after being admitted to UNK. They should have an ACT score of 27 or higher, rank in the top 25% of their high school class, and complete the on-line application including a letter of recommendation. This should be completed by February 1 for scholarship consideration, although later applications are welcome.

Please note that applications for the Omaha World-Herald/Kearney Hub Scholarship must be postmarked or electronically submitted by November 15, 2018. These applicants should have an ACT of 30 or higher, and be in the top 10% of their high school class.

The goals of the Honors Program:

  • create lifelong learners

  • develop students' ability to integrate knowledge from different sources

  • encourage students to build the ability to adapt to new environments

  • develop active participants in a democratic society

  • generate professional skills in formal writing, oral presentations, collaborative exchanges and intellectual dialogue

  • drive students to understand and work with complex topics and situations

  • engage students' intellectual agility and honesty

Advantages

Active students in the Honors program also have the benefit of registering early for their following semester’s classes, increasing the level of control Honors students have over their class schedules. We strongly believe that this privilege helps to support the Honors Program by providing each Honors student the opportunity to enhance and maximize their planning skills, inside of the classroom and out.

Honors students at Wayne State College also receive special recognition at commencement, and on their academic transcripts, as having completed the Honors Program.

Eligibility

Students must:

  • Have an ACT score of 25 or above (or an SAT score of 1100 or above)

  • Graduating high school with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)

Alternative Eligibility

Candidates are also considered for admission to the Honors Program who:

  • Rank in the upper 1/4 of their graduating class

  • Provide a sample of their written work

  • Submit a strong recommendation from a high school instructor

The Neihardt Scholarship

As long as the scholarship retention requirements are met, recipients receive:

  • Free tuition for up to 128 credit hours

  • An on-campus double room waiver for four years

  • An annual stipend of $500 for a maximum of four years

Award of this scholarship is annually made by the WSC Scholarship, Honors and Financial Aid Committee. Neihardt Scholar students are required to fully participate in the WSC Honors Program. Application deadline each year is Dec. 1.

Admission

To be eligible for consideration of the John G. Neihardt Scholars program, a high school student must:

  • Have an ACT composite score of at least 25

  • Rank in the top 25 percent of his/her class or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 for six semesters

  • Submit letters of recommendation from two high school teachers

  • Write a 500-word paper on an assigned topic for writing skills assessment
