A Holistic Approach to Teaching and Learning
The Wellness Department has designed its curricula in grades 9-12 to provide students with health and physical education skills/content to help improve their lives. Through active involvement in our courses, students will be engaging in content that helps them deepen their understanding of how decisions impact overall health & well being. Our teachers are committed to the ultimate objective of educating our students to choose a healthy and active lifestyle while improving physical & health literacy.
Wellness Department Guidelines
All students are required to dress appropriately for physical activity with a change of clothing and appropriate footwear every single class period. (Refer to the student handbook guidelines for dress code).
Students must earn 1 credit in Physical Education and 1 credit in Health & Safety to graduate Newington High School.
Students will participate in the state mandated physical fitness test program during Physical Education I.
(All students are required to take the CPFA once in grades 9-12)
Students who are medically excused from Physical Education at the beginning of the semester will have their PE course moved to another semester.
Students who are medically excused for an extended period of time must provide a physician's note directly to the school nurse. Alternate physical activities will be provided and determined on a case by case basis dependent upon the student injury.
Students participating in physical activity classes will receive a daily mastery grade that is aligned to national and state Physical Education standards.
