Course Overview
Single and double BTEC Sport is aimed at students with an interest in sport, exercise and health and includes a range of practical and theory based lessons in order to give students an insight into a variety of sports.
The single award is the equivalent of one A Level and the double award is the equivalent of two A Levels. The single award you would study four units and the double nine units.
Who is this qualification for? BTEC Sport is an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment in the sport sector.
What does this qualification cover? The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. Employers and professional bodies have also been involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for learners who may choose to enter employment directly in the sport sector.
Learners will study three mandatory units:
• Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology (Single and double award)
• Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (single and double award)
• Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry (single and double award)
Unit 22: Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry (Double award)
Unit 23: Skill Acquisition in Sport (Double award)
Learners will also choose optional units from a range which has been designed to support choices in progression to sport courses in higher education, and to link with relevant occupational areas. These are currently:
Unit 4: Sports Leadership (Single and double award)
Unit 10: Sports Event Organisation (Double award)
Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance (Double award)
Unit 25: Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport (Double award)
Unit's 1/2/22 are exam based (externally marked)
Unit's 3/4/7/10/23/25 are coursework where a range of assessment methods are used e.g. written work and videos

Higher Education Progression Routes
University degree
There are a number of sports related courses that students can progress onto e.g. Sports Science, coaching. These are normally three year courses.
sport apprenticeships
There are a number of apprenticeships that students can can apply for. These include sports coaching across a number of sports and school sports.
online learning
The Open University and other institutions provide online courses that are flexible and can be studied alongside a job. These range from full degrees to diplomas.
