Food Science and Nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Over the duration of the 2 years of the course you will explore the relationship between food, nutrition and health, across a range of interesting but challenging modules. Making use of creative, investigative and analytical study methods, you will learn and demonstrate an understanding of the science of nutrition, nutritional needs in a wide range of contexts, as well as Food Safety and also having the opportunity to explore different topically issues within Food. The ongoing practical sessions enable you to gain a wide range of high level skills to produce quality food items.
Working on a selection of optional units over the duration of the course, you will be able to tailor your studies towards your area of interest, these include developing knowledge and problem solving in areas such as food production, food science and nutrition.
The course is suitable for students who have studied Hospitality and Catering, or other equivalent Food courses, or those students with a strong background in Science.
Meeting the Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups
This unit has an external exam, as well as an internal assessment which includes a 'practical' exam
The external assessment will be:
• 90 minute examination; plus 15 minutes reading time
• Total of 90 marks
• Three sections on each paper
• Section A is short answer questions
• Section B is extended answer questions
• Section C relates to a case study
The internal assessment will be an externally set question which the students will investigate and come up with a range of suggestions which will include the production of a high skilled practical outcome.
Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat (external assignment)
This is an 8 hour timed assessment, with the question set by the exam board in the summer term. Students will have opportunity to explore a range of different areas that food producers and manufacturers use to help ensure that food they make and we ultimately buy and eat is safe.

Throughout the duration of the course there will be a variety of support sessions aimed to help develop both the theoretical and practical skills of the students.
There a variety of apprenticeships available in Food, ranging from the more traditional practical based careers ranging to the science based route
There a variety of degree courses that are linked to Food, these range from nutrition, food quality and safety, to quality assurance and environment health
Student can choose to enter the world of work in their chosen area of specialism
Develop your career in a wide range of jobs in the food industry by working in a professional kitchen
Working either in a professional kitchen or in factories to create, monitor and develop a range of new products for restaurant menus or mass production
Working in the NHS or private sector to help support the development and support of individuals with their nutritional needs
