Welcome to Fifth Grade Art, the year where creativity, critical thinking, and craftsmanship come together. As the leaders of the elementary art program, students will be challenged to think more independently, take creative risks, and create artwork that reflects their unique ideas and perspectives.
This year, the classroom becomes a true artist's studio. Students will move beyond learning artistic techniques and begin using those skills to solve design challenges, communicate messages, and develop a personal artistic voice. They'll discover that artists are innovators, storytellers, inventors, and problem solvers whose work has the power to inspire, inform, and change the world.
Every unit is thoughtfully aligned with the Wisconsin Visual Arts Standards and driven by an Essential Question that encourages students to make meaningful connections between art, history, science, technology, culture, and the world around them. Students will explore a wide variety of traditional and contemporary artists while learning how creativity plays a role in nearly every career and every aspect of life.
Throughout the year, Fifth Grade artists will:
Apply the Elements of Art and Principles of Design with purpose and confidence.
Develop advanced craftsmanship through thoughtful planning, practice, and revision.
Experiment with a wide range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media, fiber arts, and digital art.
Analyze and discuss artwork using artistic vocabulary and thoughtful reflection.
Solve creative problems by testing ideas, learning from mistakes, and revising their work.
Build confidence in expressing their own artistic voice while respecting the ideas and perspectives of others.
Our art studio is a place where curiosity is celebrated, creativity is expected, and perseverance is valued. Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore multiple solutions, and understand that the creative process is just as important as the finished piece. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow as both an artist and a thinker.
As students prepare for middle school, they will carry with them the confidence to create, the courage to take risks, and the understanding that creativity is one of the most valuable skills they can use throughout their lives.
Let's finish our elementary art journey by creating artwork that is bold, meaningful, and uniquely our own!
