Fourth Grade is where creativity meets craftsmanship. As students continue their artistic journey, they begin creating more complex, meaningful works of art while learning to think critically, solve creative challenges, and develop their own artistic style.
In my classroom, students are encouraged to move beyond simply following directions. They will begin making intentional decisions about composition, color, materials, and technique while exploring how artists communicate ideas, emotions, and stories through their work. Every project challenges students to think creatively, experiment confidently, and discover new ways to express themselves.
Each unit is aligned with the Wisconsin Visual Arts Standards and guided by an Essential Question that encourages students to connect art with history, science, literature, mathematics, culture, and everyday life. Students will investigate how art shapes communities, reflects cultures, and inspires innovation across the world.
Throughout the year, Fourth Grade artists will:
Strengthen their understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design through increasingly challenging projects.
Develop craftsmanship by refining techniques and paying close attention to detail.
Plan, sketch, revise, and reflect as part of the creative process.
Explore a variety of artistic media including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media, fiber arts, and introductory digital art.
Analyze the work of artists from diverse cultures and time periods to inspire their own creative thinking.
Build confidence by solving artistic problems independently and explaining the choices they make as artists.
Our art studio is a creative space where curiosity is celebrated, mistakes are viewed as opportunities for growth, and every student is encouraged to develop their own artistic voice. Students will learn that creativity isn't about finding the perfect answer, it's about asking thoughtful questions, exploring new ideas, and persevering through challenges.
By the end of Fourth Grade, students will have grown not only as artists but also as innovative thinkers, collaborative learners, and confident creators who understand that the skills they develop in art, creativity, observation, resilience, and problem solving, can be applied to every area of life.
Let's continue creating, exploring, and discovering what is possible through art!
